RESIDENCIA REMOTA: Discover & Create from the End of the World

In Aysén-Patagonia, where nature and science coexist in silence, research often remains unseen.

I designed RESIDENCIA REMOTA to bridge that gap - inviting artists to translate scientific findings into experiences the community could feel, see, and claim as their own.

Ten research projects funded by the Regional Government of Aysén had uncovered stories about bioactive plants, local health, biodiversity, and heritage — yet their reach often ended in reports. I secured new funding from Chile’s Ministry of Education to open those discoveries to the world through art, creating an institutional space where science and culture could meet.

To make that vision possible, I first needed to build trust between both worlds. Before launching RESIDENCIA REMOTA, I organized formative workshops for our researchers  — spaces where scientific inquiry could meet artistic sensibility. At first, many researchers feared letting their work be reinterpreted by someone outside their field, but they believed in the idea — they handed me their research outputs, and together we co-designed the dossier that artists would study and translate into new works, bridging science, art, and community.

Our call attracted over eighty applicants from across Chile and beyond — artists drawn to create from the margins, the periphery, the remote. They came to translate science into experience, to radicalize both art and knowledge from one of the world’s southernmost territories. In the labs of Aysén, color met chemistry, curiosity met method — and something entirely new began to take shape.

RESIDENCIA REMOTA brought artists and scientists together to create new ways of seeing and understanding the Patagonian territory. This collage captures moments from the creative process and the final exhibition — a living dialogue between art, science, and community that marked a milestone in Chile’s cultural landscape.

The first edition of RESIDENCIA REMOTA brought together five artists and five research teams in a singular collaborative journey that culminated in one major exhibition — visited by more than 10,000 people. Beyond numbers, it affirmed the power of art and science to co-create new narratives for Patagonia and to position Universidad de Aysén as a pioneering hub for interdisciplinary creation in Chile.
